Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His papa introduced him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to pickup anything he possibly could about the game. Phil would tell his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the detrimental feedback from others kill his goal of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.
Phil began competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a teaching opportunity and winning wasn’t a regular outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made two final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he defeated many of the well known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and a continuing passion for poker. He says that he is picking up skills every single day and is quite humble about his success. Phil knows he makes errors every single session of poker and constantly strives to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a normal basis.
