Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor in the world by most of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before reaching the age of one. His papa taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to discover whatever he possibly could about poker. He routinely would tell his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not let the detrimental feedback from others kill his goal of being one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.
Phil began competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for him were a learning experience and winning was not a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he destroyed a number of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable love for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s learning every day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. He admits to making mistakes in each game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Even though Ivey has won some big tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
