Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the planet by many of the top-ranked pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His papa taught him one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to learn everything he possibly could about the game. He routinely would tell his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not permit the negative feedback from others destroy his goal of being one of the strongest poker competitors on the planet.
He began playing seriously after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the casinos of Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a learning experience and coming away with a win was not a normal outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved two final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated many of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to dedication and a continuing love for the game of poker. He says that he’s learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his achievements. Phil knows he makes errors in each session of poker and constantly strives to improve.
Even though Phil has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a regular basis.
