Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker competitor on the globe by quite a few of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to learn whatever he could about poker. He routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t let the detrimental feedback from other people annihilate his ambition of being one of the best poker players in the world.
Phil began playing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial few years for Phil were a learning period and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he destroyed many of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to discipline and an eternal passion for poker. Phil says that he’s learning every single day and is very humble about his success. Phil knows he makes errors in each game of poker and always strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Phil has won some big tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a regular basis.
