Phil Ivey has been labeled as the best poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His grandpa showed him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup whatever he possibly could about the game. Phil would tell his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He didn’t let the negative comments from others kill his ambition of being one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.
He began playing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his abilities at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a learning period and coming away with a win was not a regular thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP where he made 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated a number of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to discipline and an eternal passion for the game of poker. He states that he’s learning every day and is quite humble about his accomplishments. He admits to making errors in each game of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Even though Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a normal basis.
