Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker contender on the planet by quite a few of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to learn whatever he could about poker. Phil routinely told his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the adverse feedback from other people destroy his goal of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors on the planet.
He began competing seriously after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a teaching opportunity and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he destroyed many of the well known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to hard work and an immeasurable love for poker. Phil states that he’s learning every day and is very abashed about his success. He admits to making mistakes in each game of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Even though Ivey has come first in some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
