Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor on the planet by many of the top professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His papa showed him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to discover anything he possibly could about poker. He would tell his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the adverse feedback from others kill his dream of becoming one of the strongest poker players in the world.
He began playing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a learning experience and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he destroyed quite a few of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to discipline and an undying love for poker. Phil states that he’s picking up skills every single day and is incredibly abashed about his success. Phil knows he makes mistakes every single session of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some large tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a normal basis.
